Description
A Columbia Artists production Saturday, February 13, 2016 at 8PM Check off two more classical ballets from your “bucket list” and celebrate the eve of Valentine’s Day at the same time! A must-see for all dancers and dance lovers, Moscow Festival Ballet brings two of the most romantic classical works to our stage told in the grand tradition of Russian ballet. First up is the popular Romeo and Juliet followed after intermission by the fiery ballet version of the opera Carmen. Romeo and Juliet is Shakespeare's classic tale of young star-crossed lovers. This tragic love story is illuminated by Petipa's brilliant choreography and Tchaikovsky's majestic score, and complemented by resplendent costumes and stunning sets. Following intermission, the dancers return to perform Carmen Suite, a ballet choreographed by Cuban Alberto Alonso for Bolshoi star Maya Plisetskaya in the ‘60s. Based on George Bizet’s opera Carmen, Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin reorchestrated the opera using new instruments and themes from another of Bizet’s works L’Arlesienne as well as Massenet’s Le Cid, creating the Carmen Suite.
