Based in part on Studs Terkel’s Hard Times, this ‘Vaudeville’, as Miller puts it, paints a picture of one of the most far-reaching social calamities in history – the Great Depression of the thirties. The play illustrates the texture of life in America’s cities, farms, Wall Street and the bread lines capturing both despair, bafflement, resilience, and stubborn optimism in this vivid portrayal of real people with an indomitable spirit to survive and prevail.
